Typical hard drive.

Think of the hard drive as a filing cabinet where all of your files and programs are stored.

What to look for when buying a hard drive

  • Capacity, which is measured in bytes, larger is better.
  • Seek time Speed as measured in nanoseconds lower is better.
  • Cost and brand.

Remember hard drives wear out replace them every few years.

What do you mean my hard rive will wear out I thought all I had to do was worry about filling it up! The hard drive is one of the few mechanical parts of your computer, it contains a data disk that spins. The mere fact that it is mechanical and moves is enough reason to replace them every so often. We never realize how much data we have till it is gone.

Consider buying a second hard drive just to back up your data.
