Typical video card.

For the average home computer or business user a built in, or inexpensive video card is okay. But if you plan on doing any video capture or serious gaming then you will need to upgrade to a more powerful video card.

Sounds like I need a better video card, what do I look for?

  • Look for a card with at least 4X AGP (provided you have an AGP slot)
  • Get a card with at least 64 megabytes of ram on it.
  • look for options like TV out or video in.
  • Buy a name brand or one with a name brand chipset.

Okay so which one do I need

We have used several different brands and find any of them with the Nvidea or ATi chip set work well. Look for the high end versions of these and stay away from the "MX" versions of all of these cards.

  • The Gforce Ti4200 is a good value at this time and is a great gaming card.
  • The ATI cards are very good and make excellent video capture cards.
  • Consider your needs do you need video in or out?
  • You can even add a TV card to your machine and watch TV while surfing the net.
